10 (3-inch) popcorn balls

Ingredients

  • 2cupswhite sugar
  • 1cuplight corn syrup
  • ½cupbutter
  • ¼cupwater
  • salt to taste
  • 1teaspoonvanilla extract (Optional)
  • 1teaspoondistilled white vinegar (Optional)
  • 5quartspopped popcorn

  • Directions

Combine sugar, corn syrup, butter and water in a heavy saucepan over medium heat. Stir and heat to hard-crack stage or 300 degrees F (150 degrees C). Remove from heat, add vanilla or vinegar; mix well.

Slowly pour hot syrup over the popcorn while stirring with a long-handled spoon until all kernels are coated. Let mixture cool about 5 minutes until safe to handle. Grease your hands lightly with butter or spray, then form mixture into 3-inch balls. Place on waxed paper to cool completely.

    Cook’s Note

The syrup hardens quickly, so shape the popcorn balls while the mixture is still warm. Add colored sugar before syrup hardens for some festive sparkle.

You can form smaller 2-inch balls and thread them onto lollipop sticks for easy serving at parties.
