5 dozen cookies

Ingredients

  • 2 ½cupsall-purpose flour

  • ¾teaspoonsalt

  • ½teaspoonbaking soda

  • 1 ½cupswhite sugar

  • ½cupbutter, softened

  • ½cupshortening

  • 1teaspoonvanilla extract

  • 1large egg

  • 2tablespoonsmilk

  • 1tablespoonwhite sugar, or as desired

  • Directions

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C).

Sift flour, salt, and baking soda together in a bowl. Beat 1 ½ cups sugar, butter, shortening, and vanilla extract together in a separate bowl until thoroughly combined. Add egg; beat until creamy. Stir sugar mixture into flour mixture until smooth; stir in milk.

Drop teaspoonsfuls of dough onto a baking sheet; flatten with the bottom of a water glass. Sprinkle tops of cookies with enough sugar to cover cookies entirely.

Bake in the preheated oven until lightly browned around edges, 10 to 12 minutes.

    Cook's Notes:

Have all ingredients at room temperature (except milk and egg).

Muz's recipe calls for 2 tablespoons milk, but the dough seemed a little dry after the first go-round, so I added another 1 tablespoon milk, which turned out really well. So I recommend 3 instead of 2.

I added another ½ teaspoon vanilla for more flavor, so do what you want with it.

Her recipe also called for just 1 cup white sugar, but after following it the first time, they just weren't as sweet as I remembered. So when I made them the second time, I added another ½ cup, which turned out perfect. Again, do what you want.
